Glassfish - new kid on the block or not?

Glassfish you could say is the new J2EE web application server in town, although its roots go back to 2005 when the project was kicked off. However lets look a little deeper into the whole story.

Glassfish is in fact a derivative of other application servers.

Glassfish released in its latest form in september 2007 is in fact a derivative of Sun-One Application Server, Sun-One Application Server is a derivative of iPlanet Application Server.
iPlanet Application Server is a derivative of Netscape Application Server and NetDynamics Application Server.

The Sun-Netscape Alliance was what was known back then as iPlanet.

You could say that Glassfish commercial version is Sun-One Application Server 9.1
